Freak-a me? No sir freak-a YOU!

October 21, 2007

Let me take you back to the simpler time of 1995 and a show made of stock footage and awesome. You know what I’m talking about: Freakazoid. Like most shows that started on the Kid’s WB, it didn’t get the attention it deserved. However, like many other shows on the Kid’s WB, it eventually aired on Cartoon Network where it was able to reach a larger audience. The rest you can say is history. For the most part. As a series Freakazoid only went on for two seasons over a course of two years. Despite the short run, it still holds a place in a lot of people’s hearts.

Now when you think of Freakazoid, a few things come to mind. One is how much stock footage was used. Sometimes for really no reason at all. Things like this is what made the show great. Random humor with a dash of action and a load of references that a lot of us might of not gotten at the time. Freakazoid had some amazing characters that would make you actually laugh out loud. From crazy villains that would often talk to Freakazoid about things in their life instead of fighting him, to a butler that sounded an awful lot like Dr. Smith from lost in space, to Sergeant Cosgrove, who would show up just in time to take Freakazoid away from what he was doing (and then remind him that he should be doing it while giving him some helpful advice).

The series will always be one of my favorites. I personally believe it could have gone on for another season and not have lost any of its greatness (unlike some of today’s cartoons, which get dragged into way more seasons than they should). The series hasn’t been on TV since 2003, but here is to hoping that the DVD (which is “in the works”) actually comes to be. If you ever get a chance to watch some episodes online (and there are ways, believe me) go FREAK OUT! a bit. You will not be disappointed.
